Director of Guitar Education, Minneapolis Public Schools
Whether conducting, singing, or playing an instrument, Director Ruth LeMay has always filled her days making music, but her first love has always been guitar. This fall will mark her 31st year of teaching and she loves it more and more each year.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota in instrumental and vocal music education in 1987, and her Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in Choral Conducting and Music Education in 2002. During the last fifteen years, Ruth’s focus has evolved from choir to guitar and building guitar education in MPS, where she has developed programs at Edison, Field, Washburn, and Southwest. Ruth has presented with multiple groups at the South Dakota and Minnesota Music Educator’s State Conventions and is a guest speaker for guitar education regarding special needs music learners at numerous colleges in the metro area.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoys her full household of family; her wife, Karen (MPS educator), son (18), daughter (14 and a SWHS student), mother-in-law, and two dogs all reside together in their south Minneapolis home, where the guest bedroom is frequently occupied by Ruth’s mother (who recently celebrated 97 years)!
