Reid Wixson

Director of Instrumental Music

Mr. Wixson has been teaching music since 2003 and each year just keeps getting more fulfilling, more rewarding, and more musically satisfying.

He graduated from St. Olaf College in 2003, and from the University of St. Thomas with a Masters in Instrumental Music Education in 2010. Before Southwest, Reid taught in Eden Prairie, Lakeville, and Burnsville. From 2010–2013, both he and his wife taught at the American School of Bombay in Mumbai, India, where she taught elementary music, he directed the 6-12 grade band program, and their son Daniel was born. Their daughter Eva, was born in 2016 (the day after the Lake Harriet Band Shell Concert!), and they are a happy family of four. They love traveling, spending time outdoors and around the lakes here in Minneapolis, getting together with friends, and frequently seeing members of the SWHS Performing Arts community while out and about.

Mr. Wixson is a card-carrying member of the National Association for Music Education, the Minnesota Music Educators Association, and the Minnesota Band Directors Association. He is also a trained IB Music Educator. Mr. Wixson has directed honor bands in Anoka (MN), Chennai (India), and Dhaka (Bangladesh) and has served as an All-State Clarinet judge and section coach.
