IB Music

A full Diploma course taught for both HL and SL students, the goal of this course is to equip students with the requisite music theory and listening skills along with a historical perspective to concretely discuss music of any style in a thoughtful and meaningful way.

Wind Ensemble

The flagship ensemble of the band program is the Wind Ensemble. The group performs advanced literature, requires an audition for membership, and represents Southwest at the MSHL large-group contest. The goal of this ensemble is to further hone both the individual and large-group musical skills of each student and prepare students for continuation in music beyond high school. The group tours annually and has recently ventured to Memphis (2013), Colorado Springs (2014), Chicago (2015), and Kansas City (2016). This ensemble is directed by Mr. Wixson.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is an ensemble that performs intermediate-advanced literature, does not require an audition for membership, and performs regularly throughout the year. The goal of this ensemble is to further hone both the individual and large-group musical skills of each student and prepare students for continuation in music beyond high school. This ensemble is directed by Mr. Wixson.

Marching Band

The Marching Band forms during the two weeks of band camp and performs in several parades in the fall, as well as in homecoming weekend festivities. There is no fee or audition for membership of this ensemble. This is not a graded/for credit course and will be directed by Mr. Wixson with assistance from Mr. Adam Randall and your 2017–2018 drum majors, Max Voda (‘17), Keegan Robinson (‘18), and Mark Pekala (‘19).

Pep Band

All members of the band program will be divided into two equally balanced Pep Bands: Laker Pep Band (LPB) and Anchor Pep Band (APB). The goal of these ensembles is to bring pride to our band program, further a sense of community for the school, and support the athletic teams. This is not a graded/for credit course and will be directed by Mr. Wixson with assistance from Mr. Adam Randall and your 2017–2018 drum majors, Max Voda (‘17), Keegan Robinson (‘18), and Mark Pekala (‘19).
