Under the guidance of Director Reid Wixson, the instrumental music program at Southwest provides students with the passion and skills to continue playing their instrument for years to come after high school. Through the study of diverse, high-quality repertoire and a clear rehearsal schedule, students learn a variety of styles and performance norms. Our fundamental belief is that students learn best by playing their instrument and receiving feedback from their peers and mentors.
Each ensemble develops throughout the year to work on more technically and artistically challenging pieces. In addition to the large ensemble work, students also work in student-led small ensembles: brass quintets, string quartets, jazz combos, etc. Through these experiences, students grow as independent music-makers where they take full ownership of their artistic product, from the selection of material to the rehearsal process to the final performance.
